Message:  Protecting Pitchers During Live At-Bats and Simulated Games

As you know, live at-bats and simulated games have become an increasingly important part of player development. They provide pitchers and hitters with valuable game-like repetitions that traditional batting practice cannot fully replicate.

However, these environments also create a player-safety concern that deserves greater attention: the exposure of pitchers to hard-hit comebackers.

During live at-bats, hitters are facing pitchers who are intentionally disrupting timing through changes in velocity, movement, location, and pitch sequencing. Unlike traditional batting practice, where hitters often see more predictable pitches, live pitching can produce late swings, mis-hits, and lower-trajectory batted balls that may be directed back toward the mound.

This risk can become particularly concerning during preseason training and in confined indoor batting-cage environments, where pitchers and hitters may be working at regulation or near-regulation distances with limited space surrounding them.

Traditional L-screens can provide protection, but many pitchers prefer not to use them during live at-bats because they can feel bulky, restrict visibility, and interfere with the natural sightline between the pitcher, catcher, and strike zone. As a result, pitchers may elect to throw without protection.

We set out to develop a better solution.

The KIRILLOFF LIVE AT BATS SCREEN was designed specifically to provide pitchers with greater protection while preserving the visual experience and game-like environment of a live at-bat.

Measuring 9 feet high by 9 feet wide, the screen is designed so that, from the perspective of both the pitcher and hitter, it minimizes visual obstruction while allowing the pitcher to maintain a natural view of the catcher and strike zone. The objective is simple: provide meaningful protection without taking away the feel of a true pitcher-versus-hitter competition.

We have tested and developed the screen with the demands of live pitching environments in mind, and it can also be incorporated into traditional batting-practice settings.

I invite you to watch the accompanying video to see the KIRILLOFF LIVE AT BATS SCREEN in use and better understand its design and potential application within a professional player-development program.

Pitchers represent a significant investment in every Major League organization. As live at-bats and simulated games continue to play an important role in player development, we believe organizations should also consider whether their current training environments provide pitchers with the appropriate level of protection.

Protect the pitcher. Preserve the live at-bat.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the screen, demonstrate its use, or provide additional information to your player development, pitching, or performance staff.
